Editing Templates

You can edit NetObjects Fusion templates. You should make a backup copy of the template you plan to edit in case you need to use the original template again. If you do not back up the template, you will need to reinstall NetObjects Fusion to restore the template.

  • AutoSite Templates are designed to be a complete site or complete branch of a site.
  • Page templates are designed to be one page, or a small section of pages.

Because preferences are saved with each site, you might want to edit an AutoSite template to contain a certain set of preferences. Then, every time you create a new site based on that template, your preferences will be in place. Or, you might want to edit the NetObjects Fusion default template Blank Site.nft, so a certain SiteStyle appears every time you base a new site on a blank site.

NetObjects Fusion templates are located in the following folders:

  • NetObjects Fusion AutoSite templates are in the NetObjects Fusion 2.0\Templates\AutoSites folder.
  • NetObjects Fusion page templates are in the NetObjects Fusion 2.0\Templates\Pages folder.

Consider these factors before editing a template:

  • If you are adding assets such as images and sounds to a template, you must export the site as a template to preserve the relative paths for assets, and to copy all assets to the template's \Assets folder. You cannot export a template to the same folder where you opened it, so you must create a separate folder for your newly exported template.
  • Alternatively, if you are adding assets to a template, you can copy all of the new assets into the template's \Assets folder. Using the tools in Page view or the New button in Assets view, add the assets to the template from this folder, then choose Save Site from the File menu to save the .nft file in the same folder where you opened it. In this case, the assets are already in the template's folder, so they will be available when the template is imported.
  • If you are not adding assets to a template, but are simply changing items such as text and MasterBorder sizes, you can use the Save Site command in the File menu to save the template in the same folder where you opened it. Because you have not added assets, your saved template will still contain all the necessary information.

To edit a template

  • If you plan to add assets, create a folder for your template, or copy all the assets you plan to add to the template's \Assets folder.
  • In NetObjects Fusion, choose Open Site from the File menu.
  • In the file open dialog that appears, select the *.nft file filter.
  • Open one of the NetObjects Fusion 2.0\Templates folders, or another folder containing a template you want to edit.
  • Select the .nft file for the template you want to open.
Note: From this point on you are working directly in the template, and any changes you make are automatically saved in the template's .nft file. To give yourself an opportunity to cancel edits you make, turn off the Auto Save option in the Preferences dialog. Then you can save or export the template when you want to, or open a new site or exit NetObjects Fusion without saving your changes.
  • Edit the template.
  • Use one of these methods to save your template:
If you did not add assets to the template, or if you copied all new assets to the template's \Assets folder, choose Save Site from the File menu, to save your edited template as a .nft file.
If you added assets from other folders to the template, in Site view, choose Export Template from the File menu. In the Select Folder dialog that appears, select the folder you created to store the template, and click OK.
