Deleting Messages from the BBS

To delete a message from the BBS, carry out the following steps.

  • Open the file, bbs-data.html in the bbs/messages directory in a text editor. It is very important to use a suitable editor when modifying bbs-data.html. This file contains a single hidden character at the end of the <!--insertion point--> line. You must not use Windows Notepad; Notepad removes the required hidden character. When using other editors, do not edit the insertion point line. It would be a good idea to make a copy of the file before changing it. Numerous editors are available that will do the job; two on Windows systems that work correctly are DOS Edit and Windows WordPad. When using WordPad, be sure to save in text format using the Save As command. WordPad's default file format is Word 6.
  • Find the parent.addpbbsArray ( ... ) line. Here is an example entry:
    parent.addpbbsArray("test 01",856393725360,"Wed, 19 Feb 1997 23:08:45 GMT","ron cage",3,"message/4.html","1","4")
  • Find the reference to an html file in the parent.addpbbsArray line. Delete this file from the bbs/message directory. In the example here, you would delete the 4.html file from the message directory.
  • Delete the parent.addpbbsArray line referenced in step 2 above.
  • Save and close the bbs-data.html file.
  • In the BBS window, click on Reload. The deleted message should no longer appear.

Note: You don't necessarily have to delete the html file in step 3 above. If you simply remove the parent.addpbbsArray line from the bbs-data.html file, the entry will no longer appear in your BBS. If you don't delete the file, others will still be able to view the contents of the old message if they know the URL to the file. Generally speaking, if you remove the entry from the BBS you should also remove the referenced file.
