Internal Data Object

In this section, you will start your simple site file and create an internal data object. Then, you will define the internal data object's field names and types. Field types determine what kind of data you can store in the internal data object.

1. From NetObjects Fusion's File menu, choose New Site...NetObjects Fusion displays the New Site dialog box.

2. Type this name for your site: Employee Directory, and then click OK.

3. In Site view, rename the Home page to Employees.

4. Double-click the Employees page to navigate to Page view.

5. Create a new internal data object by one of these methods:

For Windows: Click the Data List tool and then the Data list secondary tool. Draw a rectangle on the page. NetObjects Fusion displays the Data Publishing dialog.

For Macintosh: Click the Data List tool, and then draw a rectangle on the page. NetObjects Fusion displays the Data Publishing dialog.

6. Click New… to the right of the Data Object field. The Data Object dialog appears.

In Windows, the Internal option is selected by default in the Access area.

7. In the Name field, type: Employees

8. In the Fields area, click the + button.

The Data Field dialog appears.

9. Type Last Name in the Name text box, select Simple Text as the Type, and then click OK

10. Repeat steps 8 and 9 to create simple text fields for First Name, Extension, and Department.

11. Repeat steps 8 and 9 to create a formatted text field for Job Description

12. Repeat steps 8 and 9 to create an image file field for Picture. Your completed data object dialog now looks like this:

To correct a field name, double-click the field to redisplay the Data Field dialog.

Note that you cannot change the field type or delete fields. If you select the wrong type for field, simply create another field with the same name and correct type. Your data object now contains two fields with the same name but different field types. You can rename the field with the incorrect type to Junk so you can easily distinguish the two fields. Make sure you select the correct field to display in the data list.

13. Click OK to create the data object and close the dialog.

NetObjects Fusion displays the Data Publishing dialog with the new data object.

Note: Once you have created the data object by clicking OK in the Data List dialog, you can click Data Objects to add new fields or edit the names of the existing fields in Assets view only. Open Assets view, and then double-click the data object to be modified. NetObjects Fusion displays the Data Object dialog. Edit the fields and click OK.

14. Continue with the next section of this tutorial.
