External Data Objects

To make external data available to your site, you must bind your data object to an external data file using a driver. NetObjects Fusion uses two kinds of drivers to access data:

ISAM (Index Sequential Access Method) drivers
These draw data from desktop databases such as Microsoft Access, Paradox, dBase, Microsoft FoxPro, Microsoft Excel or delimited text files. ISAM drivers are automatically installed with most desktop databases. NetObjects Fusion displays installed ISAM drivers in the Data Source Type dialog box. Also, you always have access to Access database files.

ODBC (Open Data Base Connectivity) drivers
These draw data from SQL (Structured Query Language) data sources, such as Oracle, Sybase, or Informix data files. Before you can choose an ODBC data source, you must specifically create it by binding your data file to a driver. You can do this in the Windows ODBC Control Panel or from within NetObjects Fusion.

Which driver to use?
If you have both ISAM and ODBC drivers installed on your system, use the ISAM drivers. First, ODBC drivers are slower and require more resources to bind to data files. Second, choosing an ISAM data source takes fewer steps. Note that in NetObjects Fusion, you can only use ISAM drivers for Access data files.

Updating Your Site When External Data Changes
When you update external data in the program used to generate the data, you need to republish your site. NetObjects Fusion automatically refreshes with the new data from the external source. See your NetObjects Fusion 2.0 User Guide for details on publishing.
