CORRECTING DAO INTIALIZATION ERRORS

When you are using the Data List tool to connect to an external data source, this error message appears if there is an initialization problem:

The point at which the error message is displayed depends on how you are making the connection to the data source:

  • If you are using an Index Sequential Access Method (ISAM) driver, the message does not appear until NetObjects Fusion tries to open the file.
  • If you are using an Open DataBase Connectivity (ODBC) driver, the message appears immediately.

This problem occurs most frequently on Compaq and Micron machines.

You have two options to solve this problem:

  • Manually install the DAO Jet Database Engine. Try this option first. If this does not fix the problem, then try the following option.
  • Check the MFC42.DLL file to make sure you have the correct version. If not, delete the file, and reinstall NetObjects Fusion.

Both options are discussed in the following procedures.

To manually install the DAO Jet Database Engine:

  • Insert the NetObjects Fusion 2.0 CD in the CD-ROM drive.
  • Open the MS-DOS prompt (Windows 95) or Command Prompt (Windows NT) dialog by clicking Start, Programs, and then MS-DOS Prompt (Windows 95) or Command Prompt (Windows NT).
  • Type the letter of the CD-ROM drive followed by a colon (for example, d:), and then press Enter.
  • Type the following line at the D prompt (where D represents your CD-ROM drive letter):
    setup -fd:\dao\daomin.ins
  • Press Enter.

The NetObjects Fusion Installer starts and then displays the following message:

6. Open NetObjects Fusion, and then connect to your database.

To check the MFC42.DLL file and reinstall NetObjects Fusion:

Your initialization error might be caused by the wrong version of the MFC42.DLL. These are the attributes of the MFC42.DLL file installed by NetObjects Fusion:

  • Size: under 990K
  • Date: 9/13/96
  • Version: 4.2.6255

1. Delete the MFC42.DLL file in the Windows/System (Windows 95) or
Winnt/System32 (Windows NT) folder.

2. Reinstall NetObjects Fusion.
