To better support multi-language characters in the NetObjects component suites we have made changes to the encoding type of the CSV files that are generated from submissions. The previous encoding type, ISO-8859 has been changed to the predominant UTF-8.
This change means that the components will support a wider range of characters, allowing your components to accept data from a variety of languages without being limited by the previous standard.
The change in encoding type is for the better but some simple steps to preserve data previously collected will need to be taken. We’ve provided some detailed instructions below that will take about 5 minutes to complete. Please repeat these steps for any sites that may be affected by these changes.
A text editor such as Notepad++ is required to convert the encoding type of your existing CSV files. An FTP program such as Filezilla is required to download the CSV files. You can download them here:
Notepad++
http://notepad-plus-plus.org/download
Filezilla
https://filezilla-project.org
Install both Notepad++ and Filezilla with the default settings.
Note, if you already have an FTP program and a text/code editor feel free to use them to download and convert your CSV files. The following steps can be modified to work with a number of programs. We’ve bolded items to take note of.
Download your CSV files from the server to your computer. We suggest working with one file at a time if multiple components are in use. We also suggest making a backup of the file prior to editing.
You can locate the file location by opening the component in NetObjects Fusion 2013 and selecting the General tab. Locate the Database Settings section and view the path for Database.
Note, the FAQ components differ slightly in their database locations. You can find them in the scripts folder with the following naming conventions:
To convert the encoding to UTF-8:
If Notepad++ is not listed, select Choose default program and select Notepad++.
Choose the character set that applies to your installation language for NetObjects Fusion 2013:
To convert your Website to use UTF-8:
That’s it, your components will continue to accept new data and old data will be readable as well. Your Website will also be encoded in UTF-8.
