MS Personal Web Server is the Web/FTP server that installs with NT Option Pack 4 for NT Workstation 4.0.  It is based on IIS 4.

Permissions were set as follows:

  1. Go to the Start Menu, select:
Programs>>Windows NT 4.0 Option Pack>>Microsoft Personal Web Server>>Internet Service Manager
This opens the Microsoft Management Console which functions as the
    admin environment for PWS
NOTE:  The Microsoft Management Console (MMC) lists directories on your FTP and Web server following the same model as Windows Explorer.

  2. Find your site in the list of directories under Default Web Site directory.  Then right-click on the directory in which you published the CGI scripts for the BBS and select Properties from the menu:   this is the \bbs\cgi-bin directory be default.

  3. In the Properties window, check the radio button for "Execute (incuding script)" listed under Permissions, and then click OK.
NOTE:  the other options are 'None' and 'Script' - Script will be  checked by default, but is not enough for the CGI scripts to run.

  4. Right-click on the message directory and select Properties from the menu:  this is the \bbs\message directory be default.

  5. Check the checkbox for "Write" under Access Permissions and click OK.

The permissions are then set to allow the CGI scripts to execute and the
message directory to be written to.
