Nested Tables Using Columns

This page has been published with the default publish settings of Nested Tables Using Columns. I have gone into the HTML after publishing and edited the table borders so that you can see how this works.  The basic layout we are using here is pretty straightforward. The image on the left is positioned to border my text and images on the right.   I want my text in this area to expand and contract to fill the area when the text defaults change.

It is easy to change font sizes in your browser. If you are using IE 4 you must use the View Menu > Fonts and choose the size you want.  If you are using Netscape 4.x you can choose ctrl +] to increase the font and ctrl+[ to decrease the font. If you are using Netscape 3.x you need to go to your Options Menu > General Preferences > Fonts to increment the font sizes. In IE the standard size is Medium and in Netscape the standard size is 12pt.

Try reducing the font size two or three increments.

See how the falcon images move up when the text shrinks and the distance between the two text elements and the falcons remains the same.  However, you will notice that the falcon images are no longer lined up with the bottom of the vertical line image.

If we now increase the font size back to normal, and go two or three increments larger, see how much farther down on the page the text goes. Anything else below the text also moves down.  However, the vertical line remains constant.

Also notice that I have made the “banner” for this page as a text element with a colored background. See how it also changes when the fonts change size.  This is one of the problems with using font banners like this even though they load much faster than an equivalent image. The only way to make that text always stay the same size with a constant sized background would be to make an image with text rendered on it.

Go ahead and return your font size to your normal setting, then click on Rows to continue with the tutorial.
