OPTIMIZING THE AUTHORING SERVER FOR INCREASED PERFORMANCE

Like any server, NetObjects Authoring Server performance degrades as its usage increases. However, you can do several things to improve server performance.

  • Use a machine with a faster processor or with dual or multiple processors.
  • Increase the amount of physical RAM in the server machine.
  • Do not run other CPU-intensive processes or applications on the server.
  • Defragment your drive regularly and thoroughly. If you use Norton Utilities (recommended), do the following:
    - Use the options command to set Speed Disk to defragment Both Files and
    Free Space.
    - Use the Schedule command to set Speed Disk to defragment every night.
  • Increase the size of the virtual memory paging file on the server. Refer to Windows NT documentation for instructions.
  • Install the NetObjects Authoring Server on a different drive than the operating system.
  • Install a faster hard drive. For best results, use a 7200 RPM Ultra-Wide SCSI or greater (RAID.)
  • Publish and stage only during off-peak hours.
  • Do not exceed three simultaneous publishes or stages.
  • Set the database cache size to 10 megabytes to increase the speed of CPU-intensive operations such as staging or publishing. See the section titled “To set the default cache size” for details.
  • Change the ExecutablePath registry setting to gain database server performance improvements. See the section titled “To change the ExecutablePath registry setting” for details.

To set the default cache size

  • Open the NetObjects Authoring Server Monitor from the Start menu.
  • Type Show Settings.
The server monitor displays the current setting for DatabaseCacheSize.
  • Type set DatabaseCacheSize 10M, where 10 is the number of megabytes of RAM you'd like to allocate.
  • Restart the computer.

The number of megabytes you can allocate for cache depends on how much RAM is available in the computer. If you set it too high, your computer might run out of virtual memory. A cache size of 8 MB to 10 MB is recommended.

To change the ExecutablePath registry entry
For information on using and editing your registry, consult your Windows online documentation.

1. Open your registry editor utility.

To open Windows´ built-in registry editing utility, select Run… from the Start menu and type regedit.

2. Open the following registry key

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\NetObjects\Auth oring
Server\RegisteredTasks\DatabaseServer\Executabl ePath

3. Place your blinking cursor at the end of the Value data field and type a
space followed by -u –d and then click OK.

These options tell the database server to use the operating system cache for accessing files and to disable internal dual threading.

USING AN ODBC DATABASE TABLE AS AN EXTERNAL DATA OBJECT

To use a table from an ODBC data source as an external data object, you must first create a system data source for the database using the ODBC control panel on the Authoring Server machine. If no system data sources have been created, and you use NetObjects TeamFusion to make an external data object using ODBC, you will see a message that says, “The server failed to read the Data Source description. Please contact your administrator.”

To create a System Data Source

  • On the NetObjects Authoring Server, open the ODBC Control Panel.
  • Select the System DSN tab.
  • Click the Add... button.
  • Select the driver for the type of database file you are using and click Finish.
  • A dialog appears asking for specific information about the database you are using. The manufacturer of your database software provides this dialog. Refer to your database software's documentation for help configuring the dialog.
  • Configure the dialog box to specify the database you want to use.
  • After you have configured the database as a system data source, it will be listed as an available ODBC data source when you click ODBC in the Data Source Type dialog in NetObjects TeamFusion Client.
